We’ve all heard of the “yes man.” This is the person who doesn’t say no to anything and is usually thought to be a pushover. Nobody seeks out to be a yes man. But over the last year, I’ve decided to flip the script a bit and have worked hard on becoming a “yes woman.”
A yes woman is a woman who says yes to the challenging assignments that make her uncomfortable. She accepts networking opportunities and actually networks when she gets there. She reaches out to more experienced people to ask for advice and guidance. She pays it forward by actively seeking out ways to offer her experience to the next generation. She lends support to her friends and colleagues to encourage them to be yes women too.
It isn’t always easy to be a yes woman. It’s not always fun. And sometimes, a good hard NO is just what the doctor ordered. But because I’ve chosen to step outside of my comfort zone just a bit, I’ve been given opportunities I never thought I’d have but always wanted. I’ve met really smart, interesting people. And I’ve learned so much more than I ever thought possible. All good things, yes?
