Kathryn Minshew may not be a household name, but at some point you’ve probably come across her work. In 2011, Kathryn co-founded the online career advice site, The Muse. It’s a site I’ve gone to many times for career tips, job searching, and company information. One of the things that makes The Muse unique is that you’re able to get insider info on a company’s culture and inner-workings – things you don’t usually learn until you’ve already started. They’ve also added a whole suite of career development courses and one on one coaching to help you take your skills to the next level.
To date, The Muse has received $26 million in funding, which is impressive in its own right, but even more so when you consider that Minshew is only 31 years old. She is the CEO at the helm of the business and is deliberate about maintaining a culture that is open and fun, but also values hard work.
Although The Muse does not have a gender specific angle, it’s a site that empowers women to make more thoughtful choices about their careers and also offers tools to help them develop critical skills to help them advance. I am also a fan of any women founded and operated business. I imagine that it’s not easy to be young and female when walking into investor meetings, but Kathryn and her crew are proof that with a good idea, a lot of hard work, and a never give up attitude, your can make your dreams a reality. For that, Kathryn gets this week’s Friday Spotlight.
